Anthropic’s Model Context Protocol (MCP) crossed 200 integrations in its first year; OpenAI and Google moved their function-calling specifications to stable APIs. The result: an agent is now as dependable to call as a regular API. The real question is where enterprises should start.

1) Customer support triage

An agent that reads incoming tickets, assigns priority, routes to the right team and drafts a first response shortens average first-reply time by ~40%. The critical design choice: the agent must escalate “hard” cases to a human, not pretend autonomy. Used as an assistant, not a replacement, ROI compounds.

2) Financial reconciliation and invoice matching

Classic rule sets that match records across ERP, bank statements and vendor portals balloon with new exception rules every quarter. An LLM-based agent semantically resolves the 3–5% grey area the rules miss; accounting only reviews items below a confidence threshold.

3) Marketing content pipeline

An agent that turns a business user’s natural-language question (“top 10 branches by profitability last quarter”) into a verified SQL query is the realistic face of self-service BI. What matters is catalogue awareness: which tables are certified, which fields are PII, which metrics are pre-computed — without those, hallucinated answers are inevitable.

Architecture decisions

Three things matter in production: orchestration (one agent vs. multiple specialised agents that hand off), context management (the balance between short-term memory and a long-term vector store), and cost control (route easy work to Haiku, complex planning to Opus). Without PII redaction, an audit trail and a rollback path, no agent should reach production.
